What happened, in summary
A 57-year-old woman sought care for abdominal fullness after imaging found a 14 cm mass arising from the left ovary. Surgery removed the left ovary and fallopian tube, and testing during the operation showed an uncommon ovarian cancer containing both gland-forming and squamous cancer cells. The final diagnosis was ovarian adenosquamous carcinoma.
She then underwent a larger operation that included hysterectomy, removal of the right ovary and fallopian tube, omentectomy, and lymph node surgery. No cancer was found in the right ovary, omentum, or examined lymph nodes. The ovarian cancer was classified as Stage I.
After recovering from surgery, she completed 6 cycles of paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy. The case was notable because ovarian adenosquamous carcinoma is very rare, but her own course was favorable. At 5.5 years after chemotherapy, she had remained free of recurrence.
