What happened, in summary

Betty White first saw her gynecologist in 1997 because of persistent fatigue and lower abdominal pain. Initial testing did not reveal a clear problem, but her symptoms continued. Three months later, she underwent a laparoscopy followed by a complete hysterectomy. Laboratory testing then showed high-grade serous and clear cell ovarian cancer.

After the diagnosis, Betty was referred to MD Anderson, where she received 6 courses of chemotherapy. At the time her story was published, she had remained cancer-free for nearly 16 years.

Betty later returned to MD Anderson as a volunteer advocate, meeting with newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients in the Gynecologic Oncology Center. She used her own experience of an unexpected diagnosis to encourage others to pay attention to persistent symptoms and to advocate for themselves when something still feels wrong. For Betty, long-term survivorship became a way to offer reassurance and hope to people at the beginning of treatment.
