Kristen was an active nurse in her 40s who loved tennis when shortness of breath and right-sided pain led to a small cell lung cancer diagnosis in January 2025. Because she had a long-standing heart condition and a pacemaker, she first wondered whether the symptoms were cardiac. Several months passed without a chest X-ray. When severe pain sent her to the emergency room, imaging showed her right lung was largely collapsed because of a tumor. Further CT scans and a liver biopsy confirmed small cell lung cancer, with disease described in the chest, liver, and abdominal wall. Later, she learned the cancer also involved bone. Treatment started immediately in the hospital. Kristen completed 5 rounds of chemotherapy. She also received 5 doses of radiation to the chest to help her breathing and shrink the tumor. Immunotherapy was added about 3 weeks into treatment, but it had to be paused because she developed significant shortness of breath and needed steroids. Her doctors hoped to restart immunotherapy in July 2025 if she could tolerate it. Chemotherapy made the tumors in her organs smaller, but the bone involvement led to a plan for a monthly bone-protective shot and possible additional radiation. As of July 2025, Kristen remained in active care for metastatic small cell lung cancer while leaning on family, friends, and her BookTok community.
