Lauren Koy lived with breathing problems for much of her life before lung cancer was found. She had chronic wheezing, repeated bronchitis and pneumonia, and difficulty doing the activities she enjoyed, including running and hiking. Because she was young and did not have typical lung cancer risk factors, her symptoms were repeatedly treated as asthma or infections. Lauren still felt something was wrong and told doctors she worried it could be lung cancer, but she was reassured that she was too young. Her symptoms eventually escalated to a collapsed lung, which pushed the workup further. Testing finally showed lung cancer after what had seemed like worsening asthma for years. The same full-story link connects this diagnosis with a tumor that had likely been present for a long time. After diagnosis, Lauren had surgery to remove part of her lung. As of August 2023, she was sharing her story as a young lung cancer patient with no smoking history or known genetic risk factors. Her message centered on self-advocacy: persistent breathing symptoms deserve serious evaluation, and age or risk profile should not be used to dismiss a patient who knows something is wrong.
