Natalie was diagnosed with Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer at 33. By the time her story reached the transplant stage, her cancer had progressed despite 2 clinical trials and 2 different chemotherapies. Her lung function had declined badly; she described her left lung as functioning at about 3%. A member of her care team knew of a rare clinical-trial program offering double lung transplants to selected cancer patients. Natalie was frightened by the idea, but her surgeon was blunt that her lungs were no longer working well enough. To move forward, she relocated from Atlanta to Chicago, completed about 2 to 3 weeks of testing, and waited to be accepted and matched with donor lungs. She received the call on a Thursday night and learned the next day that the lungs were hers. After surgery, she focused on recovery, anti-rejection medicines, and protecting her new lungs. About 1 month later, back pain began. Around 2 months after the transplant, scans raised concern, and a spine biopsy confirmed cancer in her spine, with 4 or 5 lesions. The recurrence was devastating after such a major surgery, but she restarted treatment with chemotherapy and radiation. As of March 2026, Natalie was living with Stage IV lung cancer, rebuilding physically and emotionally, and using advocacy to show that Stage IV cancer can look different for every person.
