Jenny Apple was a healthy nonsmoker, wife, and mother whose first major symptom was persistent pain on the left side of her ribs. During the COVID period, getting care was difficult, and the pain was initially dismissed as strain from lifting her young child. Months later, she became unexpectedly short of breath while playing with her children, which led to urgent evaluation. Imaging showed lung cancer. Jenny was diagnosed with nonsmoking lung adenocarcinoma, first described as Stage IIIA and nearly Stage IIIB. Testing also identified an EGFR exon 20 mutation, which shaped her treatment options. Surgery was ruled out because of lymph node involvement and tumor location near major structures. Her care team planned 8 or 9 rounds of chemotherapy and 30 rounds of direct radiation to the lung tumor. After a period of treatment, an MRI showed that the cancer had become Stage IV with several brain metastases. That shift changed the family’s focus from only fighting the disease to also preparing for what might come. Near the end, the brain involvement and medications caused confusion, and the priority became keeping Jenny comfortable with her family around her. As of June 2025, her husband Kyle was raising their children while carrying forward Jenny’s legacy of kindness and love.
