What happened, in summary
Molly Golbon was 39, a working mother and wife, when she learned that what seemed like bronchitis or pneumonia was actually Stage IV lung cancer. The diagnosis was especially shocking because she had never smoked and did not fit the stereotype she associated with lung cancer. After about 3 weeks of tests and scans, doctors found that the cancer had spread throughout her body, including the left hip, right shoulder, and brain. Genetic testing identified an EGFR mutation, which changed the treatment path. Instead of starting with chemotherapy or radiation, Molly was able to take Tarceva, a targeted-therapy pill, once a day. She started Tarceva on December 7. By early February, after about 2 months, her tumor burden had dropped by about 50%, and the cancer in her hip, shoulder, and brain was described as almost undetectable. The response also improved how she felt day to day: she had less pain, was breathing better, returned to work, resumed yoga, and started exercising again. Molly understood that targeted pills may not work forever, but at this point she was responding well. Her story also challenged lung cancer stigma and showed why biomarker testing can matter for people with advanced lung cancer.
