This unnamed man had a medical and pharmaceutical background before becoming a patient himself. At 44, he previously faced cancer, and years later he developed another serious cancer diagnosis. The lung cancer story began with severe bone pain that he first thought might be an injury. The pain became intense enough that he saw an orthopedist. MRI and other imaging showed a pathologic bone problem, with cancer damaging the left humerus, and further workup found lung lesions. He was ultimately diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. Molecular testing was a turning point. He expected a common EGFR result, but the test was EGFR negative and ALK positive. Because ALK was present, targeted treatment was possible. No specific drug name is given. His treatment is described as an ALK-targeted oral medicine taken once daily, with discussion of first-generation ALK therapy, second-generation access, insurance, and cost. Immunotherapy was not reported as part of his treatment. The medicine had few side effects for him, and he described the treatment horizon in years rather than weeks or months. As of January 2026, he had taken the ALK-targeted drug for about 3 years, felt peaceful, exercised 3-4 times a week, and said many people thought he looked healthier than before. His disease was still Stage IV, but treatment was working well.
