What happened, in summary
Jeff Meckstroth had a cough that lingered for several months before scans and biopsies led to a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis in 2015. He and his wife, Rhonda, were initially told that he might have only months to live.
Extra tissue collected for biomarker testing showed an ALK driver mutation, opening the door to targeted therapy. As the cancer changed, liquid biopsies helped guide treatment on 3 separate occasions by identifying new mutations and pointing to the next therapy direction.
A major turning point came when the cancer spread to Jeff’s brain. Whole-brain radiation was recommended, but Rhonda sought specialist opinions and they changed both his medical team and treatment. Jeff started a targeted therapy designed to cross the blood-brain barrier. Within a few months, the cancer in his brain had disappeared.
At the time of the story, Jeff had lived more than 6 years beyond the original prognosis and was preparing to retire. He and Rhonda became advocates with The White Ribbon Project, sharing the message that anyone with lungs can develop lung cancer and that biomarker testing can create treatment options even after progression.
