What happened, in summary

Michelle’s lung cancer was found while doctors were investigating a completely different problem. After a fall, she developed persistent pain that moved into her jaw, head, and neck and caused migraine-like symptoms. Months of physical therapy, pain management, X-rays, and MRI workups did not give her a clear answer. A neurologist later ordered MRI scans of her thoracic spine and brain, and the results showed a tumor. A pulmonologist performed a biopsy and told Michelle it was cancer. A thoracic surgeon initially confirmed Stage I lung cancer and planned surgery that was expected to be enough. On December 1, Michelle had surgery to remove her right lower lung lobe. At her mid-December follow-up, she learned that cancer was found in 3 of 18 lymph nodes, upgrading the diagnosis to Stage IIB and making more treatment necessary. She then met with an oncologist, had a port placed on January 8, and experienced a frightening complication when her lung collapsed during the procedure. Before chemotherapy, she also pursued fertility preservation; 34 eggs were retrieved and 28 were frozen. Her first chemotherapy treatment caused severe nausea, exhaustion, and sleep disruption. As of April 2026, Michelle was continuing adjuvant care, including chemotherapy and an unnamed targeted pill rather than immunotherapy, while working through fear of recurrence and trying to keep living her life.
