Donnita was 68 when she was diagnosed with Stage IA2 non-small cell lung cancer, adenocarcinoma. Her story appears in a group lung cancer awareness video with other speakers; this summary focuses only on Donnita’s personal experience. Donnita had a significant smoking history but had quit about 14 years earlier. She had hoped that quitting had reduced her risk enough, so the diagnosis felt like a painful irony, especially because she had become strongly anti-smoking and focused on prevention. Her cancer was found through a screening pathway. She had read in her BlueCross BlueShield benefits material that a WellCare check was available and that she was eligible. The same afternoon, she was told to see a pulmonologist urgently. A suspicious lung nodule led to a fast timeline from screening to surgery, about 6 weeks. The exact surgery type was not clearly named in Donnita’s segment. She describes the experience as major surgery and talks about adjusting afterward. As of November 2024, Donnita was speaking as a lung cancer survivor and using her story to challenge stigma. Donnita’s story focuses on early-stage lung cancer found through screening and treated surgically; Stage IV targeted-therapy details from other speakers in the same video were not part of her personal story.
