What happened, in summary
Fanny was newly trained as a nurse when lung cancer unexpectedly changed her plans. In May 2016, she had a small cough, then finished her diploma and went on vacation. Before starting a hospital nursing job in December, she needed a routine chest X-ray for occupational screening. That X-ray found a spot on her right lung. A CT scan then showed a problem around the heart described as pericarditis, and Fanny was admitted urgently. A pulmonologist performed a biopsy, and in September 2016 she received the final diagnosis of lung cancer. The news frightened her, especially because she had to tell her parents, brother, sister-in-law, and friends. Fanny chose to stop working so she could focus on her health. She joined support groups, practiced meditation, did gentle sports such as yoga and Pilates, and used dance as an emotional outlet. She also changed how she ate by splitting meals through the day. Her treatment is described only generally, but she said that if it continued to work, she hoped one day to return to work 1 day a week. Her priority became time with family, friends, travel, creativity, and living as fully as possible.
