What happened, in summary
Karen Lucas began having difficulty eating and losing weight while recovering from shingles in 2012. When the problems worsened, her family encouraged her to have an endoscopy. A mass was found at the gastroesophageal junction, and she was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer on January 7, 2013.
A stent was placed so Karen could eat again, and she began chemotherapy. Treatment worked well for a period before gradually losing effectiveness.
Karen died peacefully at home on January 30, 2014, at age 62. Her family remembered her love of animals, gardening, and the husband, children, and grandchildren to whom she devoted her life.
