Jeanne Guercia had recently turned 70 when her daughter shared her story. Jeanne had taught English at Chalmette High School for many years and had expected to continue teaching, but stomach cancer forced her to retire.
For more than 6 months, she had experienced symptoms that could be explained as stomach aches or back pain. She delayed seeking care because she did not want to take time away from school. When the cancer was finally diagnosed, it was Stage IV.
The illness affected the whole family. Jeanne’s husband, her partner of more than 50 years, became her primary caregiver, and the emotional strain began affecting his health as well. Her daughter emphasized how quietly stomach cancer can develop and how easily early symptoms can be dismissed.
