What happened, in summary

Bob Ward was diagnosed with stomach cancer at an early stage and underwent total gastrectomy. A little more than 2 years after surgery, he reported being cancer-free.

Recovery remained difficult. Bob struggled with eating and drinking, nausea, and maintaining his weight. Adequate meals were often nearly impossible, and he used a port to receive intravenous hydration twice a week.

Bob also described a hereditary cancer risk affecting his family. He valued the care and research support he received at City of Hope and encouraged people facing stomach cancer to act quickly because the disease can be aggressive.
