What happened, in summary

Ronnie was diagnosed with colorectal cancer after a routine colonoscopy. He remembered waking up and being told by oncology that he had cancer and that it needed to be treated. His first major treatment was surgery, and at that point his team believed surgery was all he needed. Ronnie and his wife tried to put cancer behind them, but the disease recurred soon afterward. That recurrence changed how they approached care. They began asking more questions, doing more research, and learning about biomarker testing. Ronnie brought biomarker testing up with his doctor, and the testing helped direct the team and gave him and his wife more peace of mind that they were on the right path. Specific biomarker results, chemotherapy, radiation, and later treatment lines were not shared. What it does show clearly is the importance of recurrence monitoring, patient questions, and caregiver support. As of June 2017, Ronnie described himself as a late-stage colorectal cancer survivor and credited his wife’s support as central to how long he had survived and how he kept fighting.
