What happened, in summary

Percy sought medical help after about 3 months of blood in the stool, frequent stomach pain and increased bowel movements. Colonoscopy and biopsy confirmed cancer. The diagnosis was frightening, especially because Percy lived alone and worried about the future and about who would care for a pet cat. Treatment included a partial colectomy followed by chemotherapy. Recovery was complicated by a postoperative infection, while chemotherapy caused neutropenia and prolonged the overall recovery period. Prescribed medication helped manage some of these problems. Percy also changed daily habits by reducing alcohol and eating a healthier diet. Family contact became more important, and future planning included making arrangements for the cat in case the cancer returned. Treatment has now been completed, and Percy describes the cancer as being in remission. Fear of death and recurrence remains part of the experience, but the focus has shifted toward recovery, family contact and continuing healthier habits.
