What happened, in summary

Michelle sought medical attention after persistent stomach pain, frequent bowel movements and blood in the stool became difficult to tolerate. A colon tumor was found and was described as already starting to spread. The diagnosis was overwhelming, and Michelle relied on a son to help make sense of the medical information. Treatment included a partial colectomy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Pain medication was also needed during the course of care. Treatment caused fatigue, mucositis and frequent flu-like illnesses, which were managed with prescribed medication. Michelle also changed daily habits by cutting out most alcohol, reducing smoking and eating a healthier diet. The experience was physically and emotionally exhausting, and there were moments when continuing treatment felt difficult. Family remained a major source of motivation, including the hope of seeing a son's future wedding. Several years after diagnosis, Michelle continued to reflect on the experience as a demanding process that changed energy levels, diet and outlook on life.
