Mary's colorectal cancer was discovered after a bowel screening test found a minute trace of blood and a colonoscopy revealed a large tumor. Pathology later showed lymph-node involvement. Mary underwent a partial colectomy and began FOLFOX6 chemotherapy. The original plan called for 12 rounds, but severe fatigue led the oncologist to reduce the course to 8 rounds. Treatment also caused peripheral neuropathy and weight changes. Mary responded by focusing on healthier eating, avoiding alcohol and spending more time on meaningful activities with family. A major personal goal was to attend a son's wedding, which Mary was able to do, followed by welcoming a 13th grandchild. Follow-up brought new uncertainty. Within 12 months, a tumor was found in the liver, and another tumor was discovered during further evaluation around the time of an operation. Mary continues to live with fear about future scans while relying on a positive outlook and gratitude to cope with the ongoing uncertainty.
