A 69-year-old man with a 50 pack-year smoking history and past asbestos exposure presented with pneumonia and coughing blood. Imaging showed a 50 by 40 by 40 mm mass in the upper right lung. Biopsy confirmed squamous non-small cell lung cancer with regional lymph-node involvement, classified as T2bN1M0.
He first received curative-intent chemoradiotherapy. When the primary lung tumor progressed, he underwent removal of the right lung. Two and a half years later, follow-up imaging found a 25 mm mass in the upper part of the left kidney. Biopsy confirmed that it was a metastasis from the lung cancer.
A multidisciplinary team selected a kidney-sparing approach. The renal lesion was treated with CT-guided cryoablation rather than removal of the kidney.
