What happened, in summary

Tony was 69 when he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He died on July 24, 2013, only 2 months later and less than 1 month before his 70th birthday.

Chemotherapy could only be given while he was an outpatient. Although he was released from hospital, repeated readmissions prevented that plan from moving forward. He did receive radiation, which caused complete loss of appetite and severe pain.

Before diagnosis, Tony had difficulty swallowing and recurring stomach upset. His wife later hoped greater awareness of these symptoms might help other families seek care earlier.

Throughout the final weeks, Tony remained loving and tried to support his wife, 2 children, and sisters. His wife remembered his strength and gentleness.
