What happened, in summary
Sara Souto Strom built her career around understanding why people develop cancer and what influences survival. In 2002, that work became personal when an acid taste in her mouth led her to have an endoscopy. The test revealed early-stage stomach cancer.
Sara received treatment at MD Anderson that included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Her family supported her through treatment, and she also focused on exercise and rebuilding her strength. She later described herself as one of the fortunate patients who made it through treatment and continued with her life.
After cancer, Sara returned to her work in epidemiology with an even stronger awareness that every patient is more than a statistic. She continued studying cancer risk and survival while supporting colleagues who faced cancer themselves. Regular exercise remained part of her routine, and time near the ocean became one of the ways she protected her own well-being.
