What happened, in summary
At 58, this patient began having repeated episodes of extreme fatigue. A blood test showed very low hemoglobin, and transfusions helped temporarily, but the fatigue kept returning. After several transfusions, further investigation identified stomach cancer as the cause.
At MD Anderson, the patient chose an aggressive treatment approach and underwent a total gastrectomy, followed by chemotherapy. Recovery meant learning to live without a stomach, including managing discomfort after eating too much and occasional acid reflux.
Three years after treatment, the patient reported remaining disease-free and living a normal life. The patient later volunteered with myCancerConnection, speaking with patients and caregivers who wanted to hear from someone who had experienced stomach cancer and major surgery. The central message was that treatment decisions are personal and that patients do not have to go through the experience alone.
