What happened, in summary

Rajen Sankar was one of several relatives in Lorita’s family affected by stomach cancer. He died in 2008 at age 37. At the time, the family did not yet understand that a hereditary gastric-cancer syndrome was present.

After additional relatives developed gastric cancer, the family learned in 2011 that a CDH1 mutation was present in the family. Rajen’s death became part of the family’s effort to understand the pattern, raise awareness, and encourage other relatives to seek information about hereditary diffuse gastric cancer.
