Valerie Frank was 44 when she found a lump in her left breast in 2018 and was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. Treatment was intensive, including chemotherapy, 5 surgeries, and multiple radiation treatments. Afterward, Valerie entered survivorship and returned to family life and comedy. In January 2022, back and shoulder pain led to new scans. The cancer had returned in her bones, lungs, and liver, making it Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. The recurrence brought a difficult emotional adjustment, especially as a mother of three teenage daughters. Valerie also struggled with pain and began working with a palliative care physician for symptom support alongside her oncology team. Humor remained one of her main coping tools, helping her communicate with clinicians and family even when the diagnosis felt overwhelming. Valerie continues to live with metastatic breast cancer and describes learning how to make room for both fear and laughter while facing a long-term, incurable illness.
