What happened, in summary

Samantha was 22 when she noticed a breast lump in 2019. Because she was so young, doctors first considered causes such as a cyst or infection, but biopsy eventually confirmed breast cancer. Further testing found cancer in her rib and lymph nodes, making it Stage IV, although her husband Gray describes it as an early Stage IV diagnosis. Treatment included a lumpectomy, radiation, and hormone therapy for a couple of years. Samantha later had no evidence of disease for more than 1 year and paused hormone therapy so she could have a baby, something she deeply wanted. She and Gray married in March 2021, and becoming a mother became one of the most meaningful parts of her life. The cancer returned in 2023 in more places. In early 2025, one treatment was not working, so her team switched to another treatment that brought good results for a time. By December 2025, swelling during a Disney World trip led to concern for early heart failure. A head MRI showed brain metastases, and PET imaging showed liver involvement. Liver-focused chemotherapy appeared to kill a large amount of cancer, but tumor lysis syndrome caused dangerous electrolyte changes. Samantha’s blood pressure later fell, her heart could not keep up, and she died in early January 2026 at age 29.
