Stage IV Breast Cancer: Rachael's Patient Story

What happened, in summary

Rachael found a breast lump during a routine self-check and was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2021. She also noticed changes in the size and shape of the breast and irritation or dimpling of the skin. The diagnosis left her numb, resentful, withdrawn, isolated, and powerless. Her doctors recommended mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, and Rachael followed the plan. Treatment caused fatigue, hair loss, and areas of broken skin, which she managed with prescribed medication. Sick leave and lost wages created financial pressure. Treatment also affected intimacy with her partner and reduced the time she could spend with her children. Rachael remained deeply afraid of dying and coped partly by planning her funeral. She was unsure whether she would be alive in 2 years, although she still hoped for complete recovery and more time with loved ones. Meditation, resilience, faith, healthier eating, and exercise helped her continue. She advised other patients to take the journey day by day or hour by hour, use what works for them, and accept help.
