What happened, in summary
Anna, 67, went for a checkup after noticing a lump growing in her armpit and was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. She did not seek a second opinion, choosing instead to follow her doctor’s recommendation. The diagnosis made her feel disappointed, powerless, and vulnerable, but she also held on to hope and gratitude for the support around her. Her treatment plan included breast-conserving surgery, also described as lumpectomy surgery, together with hormone therapy and targeted therapy. Starting treatment gave her a little more relief, motivation, and hope. The side effects that affected her most were fatigue, appetite loss, and weight changes, which she managed with self-medication. She did not describe major financial strain from treatment and did not make major lifestyle changes after diagnosis. As of 2023, Anna was still living with Stage IV breast cancer and receiving treatment. Her biggest fear was that the medication would stop working and shorten her life, so she read stories from others taking similar medication to understand what living longer with treatment could look like. She continued to plan holidays, weddings, cinema trips, and birthday celebrations, hoping to see her grandchildren grow into adulthood.
