What happened, in summary
Thamires, from Brazil, was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in 2023 while in her 30s. The first signs were unusual irritation of the breast skin followed about two weeks later by a small lump. The diagnosis brought nervousness, grief, confusion and a sense of vulnerability. Thamires is undergoing treatment, with a plan that includes lumpectomy, removal of affected lymph nodes, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Treatment has been accompanied by diarrhea, fatigue and hair loss, and improved nutrition has helped with symptom management. The cancer journey has also created significant financial strain. Thamires had to stop working because of weakness during treatment and has relied on help and donations from friends. Since diagnosis, Thamires has made the diet healthier and tries to stay closely connected with family through calls and messages. Looking ahead, Thamires hopes to study, overcome cancer and build a family.
