Stage III Breast Cancer: Sylvia's Survivor Story

What happened, in summary

Sylvia found a breast lump during a self-examination in the shower and underwent several tests before being diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in November 2022. Having previously lost her mother to lung cancer, Sylvia found the diagnosis devastating and felt frightened, helpless, overwhelmed and confused. Treatment included a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormone therapy. The treatment period was difficult, with diarrhea, fatigue and hair loss among the side effects. Sylvia used improved nutrition and prescribed medication to help manage them. Family became even more important during the cancer journey. Sylvia spent more time with the children, took more family trips and increased contact with the parents. The birth of a second great-granddaughter also became a strong source of motivation. A local cancer support center helped Sylvia manage the fear of not getting through treatment. Two years after diagnosis, Sylvia reports being in remission and continues hormone therapy. Looking ahead, the priorities are family time, going out more and making the most of life while continuing recovery and follow-up care.
