What happened, in summary

Patricia was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in May 2023 after her first NHS mammogram led to a biopsy. She had experienced no symptoms and described the mammogram as lifesaving. The diagnosis brought sadness and fear. Patricia underwent a mastectomy with DIEP breast reconstruction, followed by 15 sessions of radiotherapy. Reconstruction helped her feel more like herself, although she later developed an infection in the reconstructed breast after radiotherapy. She also started tamoxifen at 20 mg with a planned duration of 5 years. In 2024, Patricia was declared cancer-free. She had completed active treatment and was in remission while continuing medication. Fatigue was the main treatment effect, leaving her tired much of the time. The experience also affected her self-esteem, body image, and fear of recurrence. Counseling through a cancer charity, scar therapy, a support group, and contact with other survivors helped her cope. Patricia began retraining and planned to change careers within the next 2 years. She encouraged other patients to put themselves first, take each day as it comes, and learn about the possible effects of oral treatment.
