What happened, in summary
At age 32, this patient was diagnosed in 2018 with an aggressive Stage IIIA breast cancer. The diagnosis was grade 3 invasive lobular carcinoma of the pleomorphic type. Testing showed that the cancer was estrogen-receptor negative, progesterone-receptor positive, and HER2-negative.
Genetic testing then identified a pathogenic CDH1 variant. This finding connected the breast cancer diagnosis with an increased hereditary risk of lobular breast cancer and hereditary diffuse gastric cancer.
Writing became an important way to cope with the diagnosis. The patient had begun blogging after the February 27, 2018 breast cancer diagnosis, initially to keep family and friends informed. The blog also became a way to share the experience in real time and offer information or encouragement to other people facing cancer and hereditary risk.
