What happened, in summary

Christine was 31 when she noticed a visible divot and a large, hard, immovable lump in her breast. Imaging and biopsy confirmed stage 3 triple-positive breast cancer. MRI measured the tumor at nearly 8 cm and showed at least 2 involved lymph nodes, with 4 suspected.

Because chemotherapy could affect fertility, Christine delayed treatment by about 2.5 weeks to complete embryo freezing. She and her husband obtained 2 healthy embryos. About 1 month after diagnosis, she began 4 rounds of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide, followed by 12 weekly paclitaxel treatments. The full chemotherapy course lasted about 5 months.

Chemotherapy was physically and emotionally difficult, especially hair loss, nausea, fatigue, steroid-related changes and the fear of long-term effects. Christine combined standard treatment with supportive integrative care discussed with her oncology team.

After chemotherapy, the tumor had shrunk from almost 8 cm to 1.2 cm. Following a 1-month recovery break, she chose a lumpectomy rather than mastectomy and later completed radiation. Three years after diagnosis, she described the emotional challenges of survivorship, including radiation burns, surgical scarring, body-image changes and delayed trauma after active treatment ended. Her experience helped her become more present in daily life and more willing to ask for help.
