What happened, in summary
Antonia was 39 and raising 2 children when she noticed a protruding mass in her breast, along with irritation and swelling. She was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. The news left her frightened, confused and overwhelmed, with a strong sense of vulnerability.
Her doctors recommended a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy. Antonia followed the plan and later remained on hormone therapy. Hair loss, mucositis and weight changes were the most difficult side effects. She relied on prescribed medication and changes in nutrition to manage them.
After treatment, Antonia committed to healthier eating and increased her exercise by at least 50%. She also spent more time contacting her parents and continued visiting them weekly. Her children and faith were central to her recovery.
At the time she shared her story, Antonia was in remission. She felt more hopeful and thankful, but remained afraid that cancer could return or spread. Her main hopes were to see her children continue their education and careers and to enjoy a future family trip to the beach. She encouraged other patients to lean on faith and follow their doctors' guidance.
