What happened, in summary
Rocio was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer after noticing a non-healing scab on her right nipple along with nipple discharge, redness, irritation and thickening of the breast. She felt that her first doctor did not give her enough information, so she sought a second opinion. After diagnosis, Rocio underwent a mastectomy and lymphadenectomy. She did not describe major treatment side effects and says she is currently in remission. The journey still created practical and emotional challenges. Traveling for care required a 6-hour trip from home, which brought added costs for accommodation and food. She also described fear that she might not make it through cancer and tried to manage that fear by keeping her mind occupied with activities such as crafts and gardening. Rocio focused on eating more healthily and on caring for herself. Looking ahead, she hopes to have the financial means to take a family trip and spend more time with the people she loves. Her advice to others facing cancer is to stay calm, keep the mind active and seek psychological support when possible.
