Stage II Breast Cancer: Rini's Patient Story

What happened, in summary

Rini noticed a new breast lump and thickening in part of the breast. Because of a family history of cancer, the changes prompted a medical consultation and led to a diagnosis of stage 2 breast cancer. The diagnosis had occurred less than a year before the story was recorded. Rini received the initial diagnosis at one hospital, then sought a second opinion at another hospital to confirm the treatment approach and find experienced care. Breast-conserving surgery with a lumpectomy was recommended and planned. Rini remained in active care while preparing for the planned operation. The diagnosis brought fear, anger, sadness, and a sense of isolation. Rini increased exercise by about 50% and committed to healthier meals 3 to 5 days a week to support overall health before treatment. Having previously lost a grandmother to cancer intensified worries about survival and what lay ahead. Rini planned to spend more time with family and continued trying to cope with uncertainty while moving toward the planned surgery.
