Stage II Breast Cancer: Nia's Patient Story

What happened, in summary

Nia noticed a lump in her left breast and was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. The lump was her only symptom. The diagnosis brought fear, nervousness, and a strong sense of being overwhelmed. Nia had not yet started treatment and had not chosen a treatment plan. She was especially worried about pain associated with possible chemotherapy and surgery, and she spoke with her doctors and nurses in an effort to manage those concerns. At that point, chemotherapy and surgery were possibilities she feared rather than treatments she had begun. Nia began eating healthier meals each day and focused on the possibility of recovery. As a divorced mother, she worried about being able to find better-paid work while living with cancer. Her children were her main motivation, and she hoped to spend more time with them and see them remain healthy. She also looked forward to visiting her sister in Georgia. Although fear remained strong, Nia framed her experience around what she was fighting for: being present for her children and continuing to move toward treatment and recovery.
