What happened, in summary
Lesley, a physical therapist from Colombia and a mother, discovered a mass in her right breast. She had undergone surgery for a fibroadenoma in her left breast at age 17 in 2004 and initially thought the new mass might be the same condition. She had no other symptoms, but evaluation confirmed stage 2 breast cancer. The diagnosis left her sad and vulnerable, although she also drew on optimism, courage, hope, gratitude, and faith. Lesley completed cancer treatment and remained on hormone therapy. Fatigue, hair loss, and weight fluctuations affected her most. She managed them through better nutrition, prescribed medication, and relaxation therapies. Treatment created financial difficulty and kept her from practicing as a physical therapist for one year. She continued eating more healthfully, contacted her parents more frequently, spent more time with her family, and took more family trips.
