Stage II Breast Cancer: Jaidive's Survivor Story

What happened, in summary

Jaidive was 44 when she was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer in 2020. She had lost both her maternal grandmother and mother to cancer, so finding a suspicious breast mass through self-examination was frightening. A breast cancer specialist confirmed the diagnosis and told her the estimated 5-year survival rate was 80%. Jaidive was especially focused on staying alive for her son, who was finishing high school, and she drew strength from her faith, her mother, and her son. She made physical and emotional lifestyle changes after diagnosis, including exercising more, eating a healthier diet most days, and practicing mental self-control. Her treatment included lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. She also took tamoxifen as hormone therapy. Side effects included fatigue, hair loss, and endometrial thickening related to tamoxifen, which she managed with specialist guidance and a focus on mental calm. Treatment also created financial strain because she had to move to another city during the pandemic to comply with care. Jaidive was declared cancer-free on 11 November 2021. She remained in remission while continuing specialist appointments and medication. Looking ahead, she hoped to travel, learn to swim, study another language, and see her son build his life.
