What happened, in summary
Graciela’s cancer journey began more than three years before her story, after pain and inflammation led her to seek medical care. She also had a family history of cancer affecting uncles and cousins. She was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and responded by changing her diet and eating healthier food every day. Her doctor recommended lumpectomy, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy with tamoxifen. Graciela chose the surgery and continued taking tamoxifen. Having a treatment plan made her feel relieved, motivated, hopeful, and positive about the future. Peripheral neuropathy was her most troubling treatment-related effect, and prescribed medication helped her manage it. Healthy eating became a permanent routine. Graciela remained in active treatment and focused her hopes on spending more time with family and loved ones. Her greatest fear was becoming ill again, but spirituality helped her cope. She described herself as increasingly optimistic and thankful for her progress and encouraged other patients to keep their faith and follow through with treatment.
