What happened, in summary

Melissa Berry learned she carried a BRCA gene alteration at age 32 after several women on her mother’s side of the family developed breast cancer. The result initially frightened her, but it also led to intensive screening with MRI, mammography and ultrasound every 6 months.

Ten years later, at 42, Melissa went for a routine mammogram shortly after a clear MRI. During the clinical examination, a technician felt a tiny, pea-sized lump in her left breast. The mammogram did not show a clear mass, but a physician noticed a shadow and insisted on a deeper needle biopsy. The biopsy found stage 1 triple-negative breast cancer. Melissa had no lymph-node involvement.

She chose a bilateral mastectomy followed by implant reconstruction. Tissue expanders were placed first and later exchanged for implants. Surgery came before chemotherapy. Treatment brought fatigue, appetite changes, hair and eyelash loss, and a difficult emotional adjustment.

At the time of the interview, Melissa was a 10-year survivor and described herself as having no evidence of disease. She continued annual oncology follow-up and had become a full-time advocate, creating Cancer Fashionista and supporting the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. She credited genetic testing and consistent surveillance with finding the cancer when it was still small and highly treatable.
