What happened, in summary

Maria was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer while her sister was also undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. The diagnosis brought fear, nervousness, worry, and a sense of being overwhelmed. She tried to remain optimistic through prayer, acceptance, meditation, and yoga.

Her doctor recommended breast-conserving surgery followed by radiation therapy. Maria completed the surgery and was awaiting radiation at the time of her story. She reported no surgical side effects. Receiving a clear treatment plan made her feel happier, more motivated, and somewhat relieved.

After diagnosis, Maria adopted a healthier daily diet and spent more time talking with and visiting her parents. She tried to protect her children from the disruption of cancer and continued spending time with them, including taking more trips together to create memories. Intimacy with her partner decreased somewhat, but they continued to make an effort to remain close.

Maria remained nervous several months into the journey, while also feeling courageous and thankful. Her goals included returning to teaching and creative activities and living more closely in accordance with her faith.
