What happened, in summary
Karen first had a breast lump biopsied and learned that it was a benign galactocele. A separate, asymptomatic lesion was found in the other breast and became the focus of follow-up. When it was rechecked and biopsied three months later, it was diagnosed as stage 1 breast cancer. Karen was told that her estimated five-year survival rate was 85%. She felt fearful and perplexed because she had not experienced symptoms. Treatment included mastectomy of the affected breast, lymphadenectomy, and chemotherapy. After learning that she carried a BRCA1 mutation, Karen chose a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy based on medical advice and her own preference for an aggressive approach. She also wanted to avoid radiation therapy. Treatment caused fatigue, hair loss, and mucositis, which she endured without a specific management strategy. Although she did not face financial difficulty, cancer disrupted her relationships. She had less contact with her parents, and intimacy with her partner decreased substantially. Karen remained worried that she might die and leave her children without a mother, and fear of recurrence continued after treatment. She nevertheless planned family vacations, work, and further education, and said that cancer motivated her to try new things despite fear. Her advice was to choose what feels right while also trusting the medical team.
