Inflammatory Breast Cancer: Shirley's Patient Story

What happened, in summary

Shirley Joseph was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer in January 2024 after breast discomfort and swelling persisted despite antibiotics. The diagnosis arrived just as she and her partner, Mike, were preparing to open a salon, bringing work and music plans to an abrupt stop. Shirley came to Dana-Farber for care and completed chemotherapy, which caused hair loss and forced the couple to scale back their business plans. She then underwent a mastectomy in July 2024. Radiation and hormonal therapy were still planned as the next parts of her treatment. Throughout the journey, Mike became both Shirley’s caregiver and business partner, helping at home, attending appointments and managing the salon while she recovered. Shirley allowed herself to feel sadness and uncertainty without letting those emotions end the projects that mattered to her. After chemotherapy and surgery, the couple celebrated the limited opening of their salon, Locs by Us, and Shirley continued working on music. Her experience brought major disruption, but also strengthened her relationship and reinforced her determination to keep creating while treatment continued.
