What happened, in summary
Sally Johnston’s first experience with breast cancer came in the 1990s, when she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, an early form of breast cancer. She was treated at Dana-Farber and continued follow-up for years afterward. Over time, those follow-up visits ended. About 20 years later, Sally returned to Dana-Farber after developing lobular breast cancer, beginning a new and more intensive breast cancer journey. At age 74, she remained highly active and continued to make travel, outdoor activities, and volunteering a major part of her life. Her earlier DCIS remained an important part of a cancer history that stretched across decades.
