Lauren O’Connell, a beauty editor and mother of 2 living in Dubai, found her breast cancer during a self-exam in December 2023. She felt a large lump in the 12 o’clock area of her right breast and quickly had imaging and a biopsy. The diagnosis was invasive ductal carcinoma. Her initial lymph node biopsy was negative, and her team thought surgery could come first. She had a lumpectomy rather than a mastectomy. After surgery, her breast surgeon told her that the removed lymph node was cancerous, which meant chemotherapy would be needed. Her stage was not clearly stated, so Stage I was not used. Lauren’s chemotherapy plan included 4 rounds of Red Devil chemotherapy, named as cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin, followed by 12 rounds of Taxol. She tried cold capping but lost her hair during treatment, which became one of the most emotionally difficult parts of the experience. After chemotherapy, she went through radiation. As of September 2024, she was completing her final radiation session, totaling 25 rounds over 5 weeks.
