What happened, in summary
Valorie’s breast cancer journey began when she noticed that her left nipple had become inverted. Diagnostic ultrasound and mammography were followed by a biopsy. A scheduling call from a surgeon’s office unintentionally alerted her that the biopsy was positive before her primary doctor had formally given her the result. The surgeon later apologized and met with her in person.
Valorie felt frightened, overwhelmed, worried, and perplexed after diagnosis. During treatment she dealt with fatigue, hair loss, and peripheral neuropathy. She managed those effects with more exercise, healthier eating when possible, and medication from her doctor. Financial considerations also influenced how she approached treatment decisions. She credited her surgeon with giving her encouragement and described her cancer care as a team effort through the cancer agency.
More than 2 years after diagnosis, Valorie said she was in remission and had received a positive prognosis from her medical oncologist, while recognizing there were no guarantees. She continued to be monitored and used a post-cancer workshop to help manage fear about recovery. She also focused on enjoying life, traveling, finishing a homemade camper, and finding meaningful work.
