Breast Cancer: Teri's Survivor Story

What happened, in summary

Teri’s breast cancer was found during a routine mammogram in May 2023. Follow-up ultrasound and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis after the screening study detected something suspicious. Teri had not noticed major symptoms, although nipple discharge occurred under pressure during the ultrasound. With no family history of cancer, the diagnosis brought grief, surprise and guilt about being the first person in the family to face cancer. Teri chose mastectomy and chemotherapy from the treatment options offered. During chemotherapy, a hospitalization for C. difficile infection forced a change in the treatment plan, and hormone therapy was then added. Fatigue, hair loss and loss of appetite were among the treatment side effects, and Teri took time away from work. Family contact remained important, including weekly time with the children. Teri reports that the cancer is now in remission and continues hormone therapy. The main goals are to return to work, travel and watch the children flourish. Although loss of independence was a major fear, Teri continues living alone and values maintaining that independence while moving forward after treatment.
