What happened, in summary

The patient was 41, active in bodybuilding, and up to date on mammograms when she first noticed blood from her nipple rather than a breast lump. After the bleeding stopped, she was initially sent home. About 1 month later, she developed a large breast lump and was again dismissed before the cancer was finally found. By then, it had reached lymph nodes, including a golf-ball-sized lump in her armpit. She went through chemotherapy that caused hair loss, surgeries, and radiation over about 1.5 years, then had a 15-month period with no medication or chemotherapy and was told there was a 95% chance it would not return. In 2021, after episodes she later recognized as focal seizures, a brain MRI showed a significant brain tumor from metastatic breast cancer. A neurosurgeon avoided open surgery at first because of paralysis risk and treated her with gamma knife radiation. Later, headaches, seizure-like symptoms, swelling, and scar tissue led to an awake craniotomy in October 2023 to remove scar tissue. A new small brain tumor was found a few months before May 2026 and treated with radiation, shrinking to about half its size. As of May 2026, she was living with chronic brain-metastatic breast cancer and receiving 2 brain-directed chemotherapy infusions every 3 weeks.
