What happened, in summary
Sonia first noticed burning pain in her breast and a lump that gradually became larger and harder. She went to a general medicine clinic, where a mammogram was ordered. She later had a breast ultrasound that identified the tumor. Because she felt the first doctor had not given her enough information or ordered the ultrasound promptly, Sonia sought a second opinion; she felt this contributed to a three-month delay in diagnosis. Once treatment was planned, she underwent mastectomy and received chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy. Sonia described feeling relieved, happy, motivated and hopeful when treatment began. She also made lasting lifestyle changes, including eating more healthfully and exercising more often. Her faith and a positive attitude became important ways of coping with the illness and treatment. Sonia was declared cancer-free in May 2022 and no longer needs medication. She hopes to keep working until retirement, travel and spend more time with her family, while using her experience as an example of continuing to work hard through a difficult diagnosis.
